Pilgrims' Trail
Pilgrimage was once Britain’s most popular expression of leisure and spirituality, an activity enjoyed by Kings and labourers alike. But the tradition was cut short in 1538, when Henry VIII and Thomas Cromwell banned pilgrimage in England. Ever since, the tradition has lain fallow.
Fast forward to 2019 and Culture MK and the City Discovery Centre commissioned a new walking route through Milton Keynes called the Pilgrims’ Trail. I was due to lead my version of the Pilgrims’ Trail for the Milton Keynes Ramblers on Sunday 07 June 2020 but the planned walk never took place due to covid restrictions. I have now dusted off my old notes on the Pilgrims’ Trail and offer it again to the Milton Keynes Ramblers’ community.
Enjoy a 10 miles linear walk through Milton Keynes’ hidden past connecting medieval historic sites through an imagined pilgrimage. The route runs along the western edge of the city. Howe Park Wood, Tattenhoe Valley Park, North Bucks Way, Shenley Wood, Shenley Church End, Loughton, North Loughton Valley Park, Bradwell Abbey.
